Conversion to SI Units: (HINT: THE CONVERSION TABLE WOULD BE VERY USEFUL HERE)

A. What are the SI units for these:

  1. Length
  2. Mass
  3. Time
  4. Temperature

B. Convert these length units to SI units:

  1. 2156 cm
  2. 2.48 yards
  3. 67.2 in
  4. 2 miles

C. Convert these masses to SI units:

  1. 2000 g
  2. 4 lbs
  3. 0.692 torr

D. Convert these temperatures to SI units:

  1. 26oF
  2. 24oC

A.

  1. meters
  2. kilograms
  3. seconds
  4. kelvin

B.

  1. Remember what I said in the tutorial about multiplying and dividing? You must divide the original units with the original units, with the new units on top. In the first step, the 1 inch is the new unit, and the cm is the old unit. The cms cancel out when you multiply them together (simple algebra)
    2156 cm * (1 inch/2.54 cm) * (1 meter/39.37 inches) = 21.56 meters
  2. 2.48 yards * (1 meter / 1.094 yards) = 2.27 meters
  3. 67.2 in * ( 1 meter / 39.37 in) = 1.71 meters
  4. 2 miles * (1609 meters / 1 mile) = 3218 meters

C.

  1. 2000 g * (1 kg / 1000g ) = 2 kg
  2. 4 lb. * (0.4536 kg/ 1 lbs) = 1.18144 kg
  3. 0.692 ton * (2000 lbs / 1 ton) * (0.4536 kg / 1 lbs) = 627.8 kg

D.

  1. C = (5/9)(F - 32) = (5/9)(26-32) = -3.33oC + 273 = 269.667 K
  2. 46oC + 273 = 318 K
